From an early age Art Stahnten had a strong interest in the automotive industry. This interest started as a hobby which grew to a passion and quickly became the foundation for a successful young entrepreneur. As a student of Jersey City State University and Lincoln Technical Institute, from which he graduated in 1976, and began working at Wyman ford in Maplewood NJ. In 1979 Mr. Stahnten opened his first Sunoco station with a full service center. While only 22 years of age at the time, the countries youngest franchisee, showed the ability to not just exist but to excel in the franchise environment. With a thriving service department and steady customer base it was a matter of time before further ambitions and future opportunity to grow presented itself. In 1985 Broadway Auto Sales, West Long Branch was founded. This was a used car dealership along with a service facility. One thing always remembered was the importance of customer retention and satisfaction in the repair facility. Converting the sales customer to service is a huge advantage for any dealer, franchise or independent.

After many successful years at Broadway it was time to expand once again. In 1999 Certified Auto Mall was opened in Howell NJ (our current location). Certified is situated on the heavily traveled Route 9 corridor. Certified has a 6 car showroom, a full detail and prep center, and a 5 bay full service facility. Art is ASE Certified as well as NJETEP Certified as an emission repair technician. Certified is a state recognized emission repair facility. Over the years the Stahnten family has engrained itself in the local community. Working closely with many township based organizations as well as the local Police Dept. and Fire Dept. Certified has become a staple in the township. The service department has been built from scratch based on hard work, honesty, and a strong focus on the customer. Through the years many service customers have become sales customers, and many sales customers have become service customers. The main reason for the success shown at Certified is the customer experience. We try to provide a low pressure, honest environment so that people can actually relax and enjoy their visit to the establishment. For the last ten years (at minimum) we have won the Asbury Park Press Readers’ Choice Awards for Auto Repair in Monmouth County and also Best Used Car Dealer in Monmouth County since the category was established. Alongside Art are his two sons Billy and Mike. Both boys grew up around the automotive industry and have shown their ability not just work with their father but help expand and extend the brand. Billy, a Kean University Graduate, has been exposed to all sides of this business. He began working in the service department doing brakes oil changes and general maintenance at 16. Once old enough he began to also tow for the shop with the company’s one flatbed while not in school. Once out of high school Art introduced Billy to the wholesale side of the business. Bill has taken many Manheim courses that offer information on the industry and how to grow and adapt. He has had an Auction Access card since his 18th birthday and has been off to the races ever since. While still buying and doing the auction/wholesale work he also became the one responsible for making sure the internet did not pass them by. Mike, a Seton Hall University graduate, has gravitated towards the towing side of the business. Starting with one truck to tow for the Certified service facility Mike recognized the opportunity to grow and expand. He excelled in the Wreckmaster training course and holds the highly coveted level 8/9R certification. Today, Certified not only does local towing and transport but heavy duty towing and recovery also. We are an official police tower for the Township of Howell as well as The NJ State Police. Michael over sees a highly trained team of operators as well as an entire fleet of equipment.
